The world famous Carnaval Grand Parade is on Sunday, May 24 starts 9:30 a.m. at the corner of 24th and Bryant streets where it will proceed west to Mission Street.  From there, the parade heads north on Mission down to 17th Street, where it will turn east and flow into the festival area. Carnaval’s Grand Parade is a unique multi-cultural event that celebrates the traditions of many countries and cultures around the world. The floats are spectacular, the music and costumes lavish and varied. Beautifully designed floats depict rich multi-cultural themes, and feature musicians, dancers and other performers that excite and entertain the crowds.

For the 2009 King and Queen of Carnaval San Francisco Contest on Friday May 15th at Cafe Cocomo from 7pm to 11pm with dancing till closing. 

Deadline Friday, April 24; $500 Prize for Winners

The annual Carnaval San Francisco King & Queen Competition will take place at Café Cocomo, 650 Indiana, San Francisco on Friday, May 15 at 8:00 pm.  Contestants representing all Carnaval traditions - Brazilian, Caribbean, Traditional and World/Fusion - will vie for the coveted titles.  The winners reign over the Grand Parade and win $500 cash each. To check out all the rules for competing and to download an entry application, go to the Carnaval San Francisco website at www.carnavalsf.com  or call the Carnaval Office at 415-920-0122.  

The show this year is being produced by Silvana Souza of Aquarela for the Carnaval Advisory Committee which means  prior year producers Kentara Padron and CAC Chair Peter Balogh are helping make the event special. If you would like to perform,  or can volunteer to help make this event a great success contact Silvana. If you would like to become our symbolic monarch of all that matters beyond the ordinary day to day during these challenging economic times then please contact Karol An Meier from Mission Neighborhood Centers Inc. who is also handling the judging.
The 2009 royal immortals will each receive a $500 award. Details on the traditional dedicated royal float are pending.
This is an important fundraiser, and entourages greater than one will need to pay full admission.
