"It was very loose," Barela recalls. "We had no stage managers. We had (volunteer) ladies who were chairwomen of different venues. They'd say, 'OK, I have to go get my hair done now,' and I'd say, 'But your piano's not here yet.' "Charlotte and I were so afraid they'd never let us do it again, we spent the whole night picking up trash. She was out there in her Gucci gown picking up hamburger wrappers from the day before." | | Rita Barela- behind the curtain at the Black & White by Jesse Hamlin May 2001 @ sfgate.com/ | | Anniversary Celebration, 1906 Earthquake and Fire Centennial Commemoration, Willie L. Ashley Montgomery is the managing partner in charge of day to day production for Carnaval San Francisco 2009. She believes that reputation is built upon the skill and expertise of their seasoned team of event specialists The Carnaval San Francisco 2009 logo features a royal festive aura surrounding a pomegranate. According to the artist commissioned by RPB, AG Quagliata, the fruit references Persephone's eating of the pomegranate seed in the underworld, a story at the center of the Elysian mysteries known throughout the Mediterranean cradle of civilization for over a millennium till the ritual procession was dismantled by Christianity as part of the same general process that allowed a single annual release of animal energies before a pre-easter reflective season of Lent. The story of Persephone and her daughter Demeter was a central myth that taught how you how to deal with change, marriage, the seasons and death. Twentieth century literature has used Persephone as a metaphor for patriarchal captivity in a male-dominated capitalist-industrialist ethos. According to 2009 Carnaval artist, the image also references he retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as Brazilian Carnaval drama (Black Orpheus) where Orpheus attempts to rescue his great love from the underworld. A story worthy of San Francisco's self-image of itself as the conflicted artist's heart of the planet. | Event Types | - Wedding
