Carnaval San Francisco
2008 Awards & Special Recognition

Sometime around the beginning of 2009, Yahoo's #1 foto site, flickr.com  took a page from google's youtube.com playbook and allowed embedding of images and often slideshows on other websites by default. Prior to this we had only used our own, RSS feeds from flickr or well-labeled Creative Commons content.
This is a wiki mashup platform chosen by us for the ease with which we can share the incredible Carnaval content from these two leading content generators. Yes, we admit Carnaval.com did get too big and sprawling for many and hard to maintain for us but it will still remain the star.

Flickr AWARDS for 2008 Parade

Congratulations to pikabon
with the most "most interesting" pics on page One for the search terms "Carnaval + San + Francisco + 2008"
Pikabon placed 7 in the top 25 from a pool of 5,983 results. Also placing more than a single foto were davidyuweb and Super G. Special acknowledgment to agi500 with the #1 B&W Mission statement as well as to the 2007 winner shapeshift [11 of 25] who managed to place even though he did not upload till March 2009.
The Carnaval.com family of annual festival websites [sfmission.com, carnavalcity.com, carnivalcities.com & flickr/aforum] is pleased to buy pikabon a flickr pro account and send a small token of our esteem for this work promoting the Spirit of Carnaval...... Joy in the present!

On March 22, 2008 We found 5,650 results matching carnaval and San and Francisco and 2008. This is more than double the 2,733 posted in 2007 and does not include the many who did not use these key "terms" in their posting.  Photographers enjoyed beautiful natural lighting during the first couple of hours of the 2008 Carnaval. As we enter the final rounds of flickr rankings we must salute Pikabon.

We were very impressed to find that 5 of the top 25 "Most interesting"  of the  5,650 results matching the 4 terms

"Carnaval", "San", "Francisco", & "2008"

were by Pikabon

Granted there is a lot of yet to come action that translates into effective voting during the building to the Grand Parade in the SF Mission District on Sunday morning May 24, 2009.

Picabon

Surprisingly Picabon, does not have a flickr pro account but she does specialize in devoting her flickr presence to Carnaval San Francisco

Enchantment
"When devils, wizards or jugglers deceive the sight they are said to cast glamour over the eyes of the spectator."

---Alan Ramsay [1721]

"Enchantment is an ascendancy of the soul, a condition that allows us to connect, for the most part lovingly and intimately, with the world we inhabit and the people who make up our families and communities....Enchantment is often colored by at least soft hues of absurdity, which is only a sign of its saving distance from excessive rationality....Deep in enchantment is the experience of being lured into reverie, dreamland, by the musical charms of the enchanter."

---Thomas Moore; The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life [1996]

Tu Foto

simply describes himself as an aviation enthusiast, and photographer of pretty women. As an early Creative Commons collaborator we have featured his fotos often on our Travel Foto Guide to the World's Greatest Festivals at sfmission.com

"Most of the shots are from the starting point while the rest are from the street during the parade. I appreciate everyone taking the time to strike such dynamic poses for me. All the Carnaval dancers had very colorful costumes that helped to express their energy. They kept dancing which inspired me to keep shooting photos to capture both the great moments and their smiles. :-) I’d also like to thank the volunteers who did a great job keeping the parade running so smoothly."

---David Yu

As often as he can, David gets out and about to photograph the San Francisco bay area street parades and fairs where he inspired by the diverse cultural mix of San Francisco.  David is one of the nicest and most polite photographers in the field but he loves focusing on beautiful women as much as anyone. He has acted as administrator for collections of flickr Carnaval fotos in the past and the first post of his now extensive foto collection began with the 2005 Carnaval parade.
