Rex (founded 1872) is a New Orleans Carnival Krewe which stages the city's largest parade on Mardi Gras Day. Rex is Latin for "King", and Rex reigns as "The King of Carnival".

The Rex parade is put on by an organization called The School of Design.

One member of the Rex Organization is each year chosen to be the monarch of the organization; he is often incorrectly referred to by the (technically redundant) phrase "King Rex". The correct title is simply "Rex". The identity of Rex is made public on Lundi Gras, the day before Mardi Gras. Rex is always a prominent person in the city, one who is usually involved in several philanthropic and civic causes. Being chosen Rex is one of the highest civic honors a person can receive in New Orleans. The Mayor of New Orleans traditionally hands over a symbolic Key to the City of New Orleans to Rex for Mardi Gras Day.

A consort is also chosen each year for Rex, and she is titled the "Queen of Carnival". The queen is always a debutante of the current season. Like Rex, the queen is chosen in the spring of the previous year, and must keep her identity secret until Lundi Gras.

While historically restricted to people of European ancestry for most of its history, Rex had no trouble complying with the 1991 anti-segregation ordinances which ended the parades of the Mistick Krewe of Comus, the Krewe of Proteus, and the Knights of Momus. The first Rex, businessman Louis Solomon, was Jewish, although for a number of years in the early 20th century Rex prohibited entrance into the organization of any new Jewish members.All Rex floats are built on wagons formerly employed by the City of New Orleans to collect refuse in the late 19th century.

Since its founding in 1872, a few years after the civil war, Rex has constantly held itself to a tradition of public service. The Rex motto, "Pro Bono Publico" (for the public good) was adopted during this time, and continues to define the organization's commitment to service.

Following Hurricane Katrina, Rex organized a series of community service initiatives in 2006 under the banner "Operation Pro Bono Publico." The efforts of Rex targeted specific community needs such as support for police and other first responders, an organized clean-up effort of the Uptown parade route after Mardi Gras, as well as continued efforts to support New Orleans' Charter Schools.

If Ever I Cease to Love

February 13, 1872 - The First Rex Parade
The official anthem of Rex is "If Ever I Cease to Love", a hit song of the early 1870's era from a musical comedy named "Bluebeard". The musical's leading lady, Lydia Thompson, was performing in New Orleans at the time of the first Rex parade. The visiting Grand Duke Alexis of Russia, who had seen "Bluebeard" during his national tour, was also familiar with the song and with Thompson, to whom he had once sent a gift bracelet.

In a house, in a square in a quadrant
In a street, in a lane, in a road.

Turn to the left on the right hand
You see there my true love's abode

I go there a courting, And cooing to my love like a dove;
And swearing on my bended knee, If Ever I Cease To Love,
May sheep-heads grow on apple trees, If Ever I Cease To Love.

Chorus:
If Ever I Cease To Love, If Ever I Cease To Love,
May the moon be turn'd to green cream cheese,
If Ever I Cease To Love

She can sing, she can play on the piano,
She can jump, she can dance, she can run.

For she's a wonderful girlie; She's all of the rolled into one.
I adore her beauty, She's like an angel dropped from above;
May the fish get legs and the cows lay eggs'
If Ever I Cease To Love

May all dogs wag their tails in front,
If Ever I Cease To Love

Second Chorus:
If Ever I Cease To Love,If Ever I Cease To Love,
May we all turn into cats and dogs,
If Ever I Cease To Love

Bands in that first Rex parade serenaded the Grand Duke Alexis with the Russian national anthem as they marched past City Hall. When Rex, having dismounted at the Henry Clay statue on Canal Street, reviewed the parade, the bands played "If Ever I Cease To Love". Today, this song is played when Rex enters his Grand Ball and after the meeting of the Rex and Comus courts Mardi Gras night, signaling the end of the Mardi Gras celebration.

This song was first published in 1871 in England, the sheet music identified it as a "Comic Song" written, composed and sung by George Leybourne of Newcastle. Leybourne, also known as "Champagne Charlie, " is best known by his song "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze."

According to research published in Arthur Hardy's 1989 "Mardi Gras Guide, " the song was pirated in New York, by a performer named Lydia Thompson, who made it part of her highly successful burlesque show "Blue Beard, " which went on tour around the country. Indeed a songbook of her most popular songs, was titled by her big hit "If Ever I Cease to Love, " was published.

Reigning that day over the parade who's theme was "Triumphal Entry" was Mr. Lewis J. Salomon.
