Endymion returns to Mid-City in 2008

Endymion (pronounced en-DEM-ee-on)  is the krewe of merrymakers that puts on the biggest and most lavish Mardi Gras parade in this Mardi Gras-crazy town, the only parade that traditionally rolls through the less well known New Orleans  neighborhood known as Mid-City.

The floats were designed for the wide open boulevards of Mid-City, said Scott S. Wexler, the parade’s chief of technology, and were hard to maneuver in the tighter quarters of the Uptown parade route.

The parade’s founder and captain, Edmond J. Muniz, is now the mayor of the suburb of Kenner, but his roots are in the center of New Orleans. That is why more than logistics favored the return to Mid-City, he said, adding, “This is where we’re from, our part of town, where we were born and raised.”

“An Endymion Saturday brings in two to eight times the profits of an average Saturday,” said Jennifer Weishaupt, newly elected president of the Mid-City Neighborhood Organization. But it is just as important for homeowners here. “For a lot of people, it validates the decision they made to reinvest in this neighborhood,” Ms. Weishaupt said as she stocked up on supplies for her Endymion parade party. (Almost everyone interviewed for this article by the New York Times reporter was having one.) Source: By LESLIE EATON first published: February 2, 2008 by TheNewYorkTimes-logo.jpg

Family Friendly Mardi Gras

While some visitors think of Mardi Gras as a "Girls Gone Wild" event, for many locals and visitors Mardi Gras is kid-friendly family fun. Stay away from the rowdies on Bourbon Street; catch the parades Uptown on Saint Charles Avenue anywhere above Lee Circle up to Napoleon Avenue (Note: on Mardi Gras, Zulu parades only on the portion of the route from Jackson Avenue down). Most kids love the excitement of catching the beads; for safety just make sure they don't try to run up too close to the floats. On Lundi Gras (the Monday before Mardi Gras), the festivities in Waldenberg Park (along the Mississippi by the upper French Quarter just below Canal Street) includes a children's stage. On Mardi Gras dress the family in matching costumes to be thrown extra beads and have extra fun.
